Oncology (Cancer) Specialty Services

A diagnosis of cancer can be frightening for a pet owner and veterinary oncologists are there to help. Many cancers that occur in humans can also occur in companion animals and it is estimated that 1 in 4 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.  Cats can also develop many of the same types of cancers but their unique physiology requires a specialized approach to treatment. Your primary care veterinarian is the first line in determining if there is a serious problem and confirming a diagnosis.

A veterinary oncologist is a veterinarian that has received specialized training in the treatment and management of cancer in pets once a diagnosis has been obtained.  Nearly all pets with cancer have the potential to receive some type of treatment. With the help of a veterinary oncologist an individualized treatment plan can be developed to relieve pain, eliminate symptoms and provide the best quality of life possible for your companion. Our oncologist at Veterinary Critical Care Referral Center is Carrie A. Wood, DVM, ACVIM (oncology), the only oncologist who is full time in New Hampshire exclusively.  She has over 20 years of experience in the field and is looking forward to helping you understand the diagnosis and make the right decision for both you and your pet.
